How did you come to homeopathy?

In 1970, when I entered University to study my MD, there was an overwhelming choice of lectures and workshops about all types of alternative medicine. I was intrigued and investigated most of them. The coherence of the homeopathic approach fascinated me. I was successfully treated myself by Dr. Roland Lefèvre (a Parisian practicing in Brussels). When I understood the amazing potential of this type of medicine, I decided to go and study it in depth.

What training and education did you receive in homeopathy? Who of your teachers had the greatest influence on you, how did they shape you?

Eventually I decided to study a full academic year at the Faculty of Homeopathy in London, starting in 1977. My teachers included Margery Blackie, physician to the Queen, Charles Kennedy and Kathleen Priestman. They all told us about their amazing cures and gave us a fine clinical training. John Somper was teaching us the repertory.

With my fellow students, we created an intense study group to progress even faster. This group included, among others, Claudio Araujo (Rio de Janeiro) and Karl Robinson (USA).

After this one year, I never stopped attending seminars and conferences, listening to new ideas. Therefore, one can say that the list of influences is almost endless. During many years I have been in close touch with Alfonso Masi Elizalde (Argentina) who was the first to explain the Materia Medica of the mind in a dynamic way, to emphasize the delusion part and to consider big and small remedies all alike. His insights helped me to prescribe small remedies as arnica and sabadilla to bring about lasting cures in chronic patients.

Another major influence was George Vithoulkas with whom I created the Vithoulkas Expert System and then travelled the world during some five years to give seminars and treat patients. As many know, George is very gifted analyzing a case and differentiating remedies.

How would you describe the ideal training in homeopathy?

As any training, the primary focus should be sound knowledge of the ABC, before moving ahead in the many directions available today. Our ABC is knowing the philosophy, studying the Materia Medica and being able to use the Repertory. I have seen again and again that anyone who has acquired that knowledge even for only 100 remedies will be successful, at times beyond their own expectations.

That leads me to the second pillar of the ideal training which is offering clinical experience. As soon as possible, clinical cases should be taught in a number of ways, first to show that homeopathy really works, second to prepare all students to start practicing themselves with confidence. Paper or video cases can be presented, students’ cases can be supervised, a live case can be shown, etc.

After this initial and most essential training, any student should have the freedom to complete their education by adding the approach of their liking. In fact, that is a never-ending process!

How did you develop your own method in homeopathy? What is characteristic of your individual method?

Having been exposed to so many influences, it has always been my endeavor to integrate the ideas that worked for me into one stepwise strategy.  This led to a seven-step strategy, starting from “reading the silence”, how to analyze the case onto a clear way to differentiate remedies, follow up strategies and palliative care.

Since my Alonissos seminar in 2004, these ideas were sufficiently developed to be the backbone of all my seminars.

The main characteristic is simplicity, because I believe that this is the best guarantee for reproducibility. If a teaching can be easily reproduced, it will help the listener forever. During all these years, the seven steps in se have not changed. I only tried again and again to reduce them to their essence. Remove all noise and focus on the essentials.

This appeared to be very helpful at all seven steps, e.g. how to translate the patient’s symptoms into repertory language or how to choose between single dose strategy and repeated dose strategy.

I am glad to say that this search for the essence has stood the test of hundreds of cases during these last years and that the feedback of those who listened to my seminars is more than encouraging. I remember a mother attending my San Francisco seminar who cracked the case of her recalcitrant, taciturn son overnight after applying my hints on taking the case.

Wie hast du deine eigene Methode entwickelt? Was charakterisiert deine Methode?

How is your method connected to classical homeopathy?

The definition of classical homeopathy has become a bit adjustable these last years. If this term indicates applying the law of similars, i.e. for that patient find the remedy that has generated similar symptoms during a proving, then one can say that my approach is fully classical.

If classical homeopathy means religiously sticking to every paragraph or word that Hahnemann wrote, then some differences may be observed with my method. For example, Hahnemann introduced a repeated dose strategy, in most instances of his writing linked to the introduction of the LM potencies.

According to me, it is a misinterpretation to state that only LM potencies can be repeated. Many homeopaths, including myself, have observed that repeating any potency can unlock a case not progressing (any more) after a single dose.

To state that this prescription strategy is not classical would be a pity, because it is against countless facts. In fact, I compiled one seminar where I teach about dosage and show cases where repeating the dose made the difference. Personally, I feel that this does not contradict the core idea of classical homeopathy, which is defined in the paragraph above.

LINK TO YOU TUBE: Schroyens on Boenninghausen

"Frederick schroyens at the International Hahnemann Congress, Ettlingen Germany September 2007. Speaking about Boenninghausens gradations."

You are going to speak at the Homeopathy One Conference “Merging of Methods” in Bruges, Belgium. The focus of this conference is on an active dialogue between representatives of different schools of thought. What is your motivation to speak at this event and why is it important for the homeopathic profession to engage in a more active exchange?

As one of the two initiators of this conference, I feel that dialogue in our community is critical. In the first place, dialogue means that one person speaks and the other one listens. On purpose, we asked all our speakers to be present at all lectures for that same reason. If we achieve even only that goal, it will make this conference unique.

In our small community some of us may have gone off too far from each other. I guess we will not literally reach a merger of methods, but to offer this as a title for the conference expresses the hope we have this initiative. I firmly believe in the alchemy that can happen between people: to meet is the first step.

To have such wonderful key teachers agreeing to engage themselves in this experiment gives me a lot of hope for an unprecedented two and a half days.

What is your outlook on the future of homeopathy? What would you like to achieve for homeopathy in the future? What can the professional community do for the future of homeopathy?

It would be “Good Reply Practice” to give a message of hope. Honesty and facts oblige me to say I believe things will still get worse. One of the main reasons why our community is an easy target is because we do not stand together and there is too much infighting.

I will only give two examples out of many.

Our Bruges Conference has been the subject of regretful attacks by … homeopaths. For example, the rumor was spread that this conference was against women (because there is not an equal number of female speakers). I was shocked and sad at these allegations as this was the last of our intentions and never a thought in our minds.

Just days ago, I received a mail from my friend J. stating he did not want to attend the Bruges conference. Although he had the time and the money, he had deliberately chosen not to come to set “an appropriate symbol” to penalize Belgium which obliged “many colleagues to close their practices”. The Belgian politicians who did so will never know about this protest. The Bruges organizers are the ones who suffer from this startling action. This refers most of all to me, the only Belgian Homeopathy One member, who – by the way - had nothing to do with these closures.

As long as homeopaths choose for the split mind and do not genuinely wonder about each other’s intentions, we will undermine each other, each other’s initiatives and homeopathy.

It is beyond an individual’s task to change the attitude described above. What I am achieving now is to prepare the next version of Synthesis, which relates to this issue somehow. The name was chosen to express that the information contained therein was coming from all tendencies within homeopathy, uniting them in one volume. Synthesis has been and will be my contribution to the unity in our profession: use each other’s information for the benefit of our patients.

The homeopathic community can do many things and that is fine. If I were to choose an emphasis in these times of inquisition, I would like to suggest contributing clinical evidence and cases to the worldwide database initiatives that exist, such as Clificol. Every day we probably have thousands of impressively cured cases. If only a fraction of them would be made available in a smart way to the homeopathic and non-homoeopathic institutions, to politicians, researchers, etc., it could definitely change the future of homeopathy.

What is your message particularly to German homeopaths?

Meine lieben Freunde und Freundinnen, you know I speak your language and I greet all of you whom I have met during my seminars. A message related to Bruges is very simple: kommen Sie bitte auch!

I have heard some of you feel that the price of the conference is quite expensive. Do understand that this seminar is hosting nine key speakers and not one. I can reassure you that I, as the main local organizer, have spent countless hours to set it all up, not dozens but hundreds of hours, all for free to host you at this price.

I have also heard that some of you hesitate to come because of the language (only English). My conviction is that many of you do understand enough English to follow the lectures that will be given. It may take some effort, yes indeed. Then maybe consider the effort we made to create this unique and first time ever format of the Bruges conference.

Do come and be part of an historical meeting of minds, come and watch the alchemy between the speakers!
